Known as The Great Texas Freeze, February of 2021 was a difficult for many people in the Central Texas area. Whether from a lack of water and electricity to internet outages, we experienced multiple challenges in many different forms. These challenges did not end there, as many Texans soon faced costly flood damages as temperatures rose and frozen pipes began to thaw.

When temperatures in Central Texas fall below 32 degrees, the water in pipes can freeze causing expansion. This puts a huge amount of pressure on the pipes causing them to finally break open. Then after the temperatures increase, flooding can occur.

, Immediately do the following if you experience flooding from a broken pipe:

1. Turn off the main water supply.

The first thing you should do is quickly turn off the main water supply to your home. This will stop the further flow of water into your home and minimize the water damage to your home. The main shut-off valve is typically located outside and is buried underground near the street. Look for a round or rectangular metal/cement cover that is adjacent with the grass or sidewalk. Underneath this cover is your water shut-off valve.

2. Drain faucets.

Once the main supply of water has been turned off, drain your faucets to remove the remaining water in your pipes. This will relieve the pressure on the pipes and prevent further leaks. Also flush the toilets in the home.

3. Call a plumber.

Next, call for professional help. Do this ASAP in order to reduce further damage. You may need to shut off your electricity and contact an electrician depending on the location of the water leak.

4. Document damages for insurance claims.

Your water damage should be covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy. Inform your insurance company about the burst water pipe(s), flooding, and water damage. Verify if a claims adjuster is necessary to visit your home to assess the damage, or if you can use your own photos and documentation. Regardless, be certain to document all the damage to your home in detail. Take photos and videos of anything and everything. You will want to include your personal possessions and the structure of your home.

5. Clean up the water.

Clearing away water quickly can help you avoid excess water damage. Water damage is going to happen when a pipe bursts, but time is of the essence. The quicker you remove the water the sooner you can stop further damage from continuing. Mold can begin very quickly as well. The longer the water remains the more likely mold will grow, so it is important to clean and dry the area quickly.

6. Warm the pipes.

Frozen pipes need to be warmed slowly to prevent any additional damage. Set the heat to a higher level than usual. Using a hairdryer to heat the pipes can help if they aren’t warming enough. Slowly, this heats the pipes enough to prevent any more damage. It is the quick fluctuations in temperature that cause the pipe to burst.

7. Keep doors open.

To allow air to circulate, keep doors open. Rooms with exposed pipe damage need more air circulation to help dry the pipes and the rest of the area. Ensure there is consistent airflow.
